Create Affiliate Banners That Convert

Before I begin my recommendations on creating effective affiliate banners, let me address the elephant in the room: no, affiliate banners are not dead. I hear this frequently and it surprises me each time. Do affiliate banners on non-related sites convert to sales? Absolutely not, and if you still have banner farms (sites with only banners and no content) please take them down immediately. However, a well-done affiliate banner on a niche site does convert and provides a great baseline of passive affiliate revenue into your program. I am not trying to say your banner conversions will surpass, or even come close to, your text link conversions. Text links within relevant content reigns for conversions. However, to omit banners entirely would reduce supporting branding opportunities and passive revenue income for your program and the affiliate. Ok, now that we have that cleared up, let’s move forward with my recommendations for affiliate banners that convert for your program. Know Yourself When creating specs for affiliate banners, the first item on my list is to ensure whoever looks at your banner knows exactly who you are. Remember, your banner will be along side other brands that, hopefully, aren’t in your category. As such, include product images that clearly illustrate what you are trying to sell. Affiliate banners are not the time to go out of the box with abstract images. If you sell cosmetics, include a picture of lipstick, eyeshadow and mascara. If you can include multiple product lines (think eyes, lips and face), that’s even better. Skip the lipstick swatch image. That’s for your affiliate to use in their post body. If you sell food, include an image of your package and a clear CTA. Why should someone by it? Is it gluten-free? Vegan? Paleo? You get the point. Make it obvious because you are looking to convert a quick glance into a click. I know you spent a lot of time creating a logo that represents your brand. I absolutely want you to include your logo on your banner. However, understand that, unless you are a well-known brand like Target or Crate and Barrel, your product image is more important. Below is an example from Au Naturale on a theme-focused banner. This New Year’s banner focuses on consumers looking to reduce their chemical intake. Stand Out From The Crowd Your banner should be clean, flexible AND stand out from the crowd. I know this is a tall order for a space as small as 300×250 pixels, but it makes all the difference. Four Things Brands Look For In An Influencer

I will be speaking at the Type A Parenting Conference in the Fall of 2018 on how to build relationships with your favorite brands.   I represent health and wellness brands in their influencer marketing outreach. I spend my day online looking at amazing content and evaluating it to see if a particular influencer is a good fit for my brands. I am not unique in this task. I have several manager friends who do similar outreach and well… we talk. We’ve compared notes on our efforts, and I’ve used that insight to put together the following list of the top four things brands look for when deciding whether to work with an influencer. Spoiler alert: number of followers isn’t on it. #1 Niche When working with influencers, my number one priority is to find someone who can truly connect with both my brand and their audience.  I look beyond site views, email list subscribers and social media followers to find the experts in my niche. I would rather work with an influencer who has fewer than 10,000 followers but is an expert in their field than with an influencer who has 100,000+ followers but little credibility. I am not alone in feeling this way. Most managers I know cringe at the term ‘lifestyle blogger’. After all, what does that really mean? To us, that signifies a plan to discuss everything at a superficial level. True engagement happens when influencers demonstrate their passion and knowledge about a product or brand. As a manager, I’m looking for the deep conversations happening on social that I can use to introduce my clients and their products. I spoke at a conference recently and had someone raise her hand to explain that she didn’t have a niche. I asked her to rethink her statement. She was positioning herself as a ‘mommy blogger,’ but is that what she really is? Or, is she in a niche like one of the following: Parenting under 5 Natural Parenting Crafty parent Vegan parenting Parenting kids with food allergies Parenting free-range kids You get the idea; this list could go on forever. The different brands that will be interested in her and her business will depend on how she defines herself and her site. Don’t be afraid to dig deeper with your followers. You may lose some people, but you will gain loyalty and engagement. The key to influencer recruitment success begins with your list. As an affiliate manager, the evolution of influencers in the performance marketing space is a trend I have kept a close eye on. Early on, I saw the value of content affiliates but remained a minority among my peers. Now, the tide has changed. Influencer marketing has infiltrated the affiliate marketing world. Merchants see the value of influencers’ reviews for conversions and requests for affiliate managers to recruit influencers have grown exponentially. Affiliate managers now spend much of their time diligently crafting custom emails with the hopes of recruiting the next top performing influencer. However, many of these hours are wasted because of one common mistake. Many managers overlook the first essential step in the recruitment process: creating the prospect list.  An unqualified list results in failure, no matter how brilliant your recruitment outreach. Your prospect search should go beyond standard stats such as the number of followers, page ranking, and MOZ score. This post illustrates how to avoid common illusions and key components managers should look for to find influencers who will know how to connect, and as a result, sell to your target audience. The right-hand column is for the notes and the left is for questions related to those notes. Great way to quiz yourself or create flashcards. Join a Study Group – Misery loves company, right? No, that is not what I mean. The accountability and extra brain power make study groups an amazing asset. Always do your homework – Missing assignments, even small ones, have a significant impact on your grade. Additionally, the homework lets you know what you need help on. Talk to Your Teacher – This is an often under-utilized asset for students. Teachers want you to succeed. If you are struggling with a concept, schedule an appointment with your teacher Show up to class. – This may seem like a no-brainer but is often overlooked. Many times, teachers will provide information and even test questions not available in the textbooks. Get plenty of sleep – If you can’t process the information due to exhaustion, it won’t matter how much you study. Getting sleeps keeps you healthy, relaxed and engaged. Prioritize – Make academics a priority over your social life. It will pay off in the long.
